CeraVe talks to consumers about the importance of washing in a daily skin care regimen.
August 20, 2018
By: Christine Esposito
Editor-in-Chief
In general, the average American woman has some kind of basic skin care routine that involves a moisturizer and (hopefully) a daily SPF. And although she may not buy into the numerous steps that might be outlined in a K-beauty routine, CeraVe wants to make sure she doesn’t skip one of the more important steps in the process: cleansing. While they are exposed to pollutants and emissions every day that can lead to clogged pores, aging and breakouts, 64% of Americans do not regularly use a cleanser on their skin, according to a recent survey conducted by CeraVe. “During the day, dirt, oil, debris and makeup collects on our skin. This residue can clog our pores, damaging our skin while causing acne and inflammation,” Dermatologist Michelle Henry MD, told HAPPI. According to Henry, the residue of oil, dirt and debris that collects on the skin during the day will also trap pollution from the environment. “Those microscopic specks of pollution are small enough to enter pores and cause cellular reactions that can potentially damage collagen, which then causes inflammation, irritation and accelerated aging,” she said. When it comes to what works, Dr. Henry pointed to a favorite ingredient: ceramides. “I am a huge fan of ceramides,“ said Henry. “Not only do they help to nourish and moisturize the skin for optimal hydration, but they also help fortify the skin’s natural protective barrier to seal out impurities, toxins and pollutants. That’s why I love the line of cleansers from CeraVe. They each feature three essential ceramides, so they help restore the skin’s natural protective barrier while also leaving the skin feeling clean and hydrated.” But Henry was quick to warn about going overboard with a cleansing ritual. “Over cleansing the skin is a common problem leading to painfully dry skin that is prone to irritation and rashes, as it's protective barrier has been washed away,” said Henry.
